Children of a Just God

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

Psalms 82:6 (NIV) -

"I said, 'You are "gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.'"

This morning I felt God directing me to Psalms 82, and particularly this verse. The first thing I was reminded of is that God calls each and every one of us His sons and daughters, which is absolutely amazing! As the children of God and His people, we are heirs to the kingdom of heaven in all its glory and power, and Psalms 8 even says that God, "made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet." An incredible promise of the Sovereignty of God and the way He values us, that He would entrust to us His creation.

However, that title of 'son' or 'daughter' comes with a responsibility. If you read the rest of Psalms 82, you will see that we are meant to stand for what is right and uphold true justice - if we don't, then we will be judged for our inaction (see v1).

That doesn't mean that we take matters into our own hands, because v8 reminds us that God will, "judge the earth," but we are called to, "Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked." (v3-4)

In a world where the grey zone grows bigger every day and most of humanity treats morality like an inconvenience, we as God's sons and daughters are called to stand firmly for what is right. It's my prayer that we, the local church (wherever that might be), will remember that calling more strongly than ever before, set our feet on the firm foundation, and raise our voices to remind the world of it.
